David Cunningham was born in 1954 in Ireland. He lives and works in London.
David Cunningham is a musician and a producer. Cunningham's work has ranged from pop music to gallery installations, including work for television, film, contemporary dance, and a number of collaborations with visual artists.
Others are more familiar with his parallel work as a record producer and musician who over many years has worked with an eclectic range of people, amongst many others The Flying Lizards, This Heat, Michael Nyman, Patti Palladin, Martin Creed and most recently O Yama O.
As an artist, David Cunningham creates a series of large-scale installations that explore the viewer's real-time experience of a space's acoustic properties. These include The Listening Room, presented at the Sydney Biennale (1998), which was followed by two installations as part of Days Like These at the Triennial of British Contemporary Art at Tate Britain (2003), and subsequently numerous other installations around the world.
His works have also been exhibited at the Chisenhale Gallery, Tate Britain, the Ikon in Birmingham and the ICC in Tokyo.
David Cunningham's artistic practice also includes artist's books.
