Peter Downsbrough was born in 1940 in New Jersey and died in Brussels in 2024.
A leading figure in contemporary art, Peter Downsbrough has been working since the early 1970s in the tradition of minimalism, at the intersection of conceptual and concrete art.
His artistic practice spans a range of media including sculpture; photography; sound; video; drawing; and artist's books which lie at the heart of his work.
Downsbrough's works are based on the notions of position and framing, and explore the connections between space and language.
An artist of simplicity and minimalism, he structures space by creating understated volumes using a refined visual vocabulary consisting of simple geometric shapes, lines, words and painted surfaces. The combination of linguistic and geometric elements thus formalises structured spaces.
Whilst drawing on the traditions of Minimal and Conceptual art, his subtle work builds on the legacy of concrete and spatial poetry and embodies the rigour of a visual (re)construction of space.
