Between 1 June 1968 and 17 September 1979, On Kawara transcribed his daily journeys onto a map of his current location, using a red line. His itineraries are consigned in the twelve volumes of I WENT, in as many volumes as there were years during which the work took place. Each page is a day, each volume is a year, and at the bottom of each page is stamped the day's date.
I WENT is, to say the least, a series of plans that would have the function of an ‘atlas'. If any plan stimulates the imagination and invites self-introspection, we are here consulting an annotated work. And if this outline appeals to us, it is insofar as it constitutes the beginnings of a narrative, an embryo of fiction.
